Giulia Dellavalle Arrives for a Research Stay at SFR Création

CDP Performance Lab

From October 15, 2026 to April 16, 2027

Saint-Martin-d'Hères - Maison de la Création et de l’Innovation (MaCI)

Giulia Dellavalle, who works under the artist name giulia deval, is a PhD student in new media at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin, as well as a multimedia artist and singer. Her research focuses on vocal taxonomies: the ways in which we talk about voices, the meanings we associate with their sonic characteristics, and those attributed to them by the media, often implicitly. Her practice explores these issues through the design of participatory installations and workshops that combine perceptual and cultural approaches.

His recent works include Pitch. Notes on Vocal Intonation, a lecture-performance and a video essay with an ironic approach, exploring the use of high and low pitches in human and non-human communication. This project is accompanied by the workshop Reasons Why I Hate My Voice, a collective investigation into the phenomenon of ‘voice confrontation’. Her work also includes sound installations and experimental music production exploring extended vocal techniques and practices of listening and sound manipulation associated with the Walkman and audio cassettes, as well as the Nino Gvilia project, the alter ego of a fictional folk singer with her own biography and repertoire.

Workshop(s)

Giulia Dellavalle will lead one or more workshops designed to explore the concept of vocal neutrality through practical recording exercises – with a particular focus on the relationship with the microphone and the voice post-production process – listening back and comparing with voice libraries, concentrating in particular on the expository documentary form and on the role played by the materiality of the voice in the perception of neutrality and reliability, including when dealing with voices created without a physical body, such as synthetic voices.
